This is a true story, presented in a fictional narrative, yet it employs an entirely innovative form that seamlessly intertwines the firsthand account of a drug addict with the commentary of the author, journalist Jurij Popov, who has dedicated his life to studying and writing about society’s fringes. The story’s central character candidly shares her 18-year journey of addiction to hard drugs and concurrent involvement in prostitution, leaving no room for sugarcoating. The author collected these testimonies over a span of 30 years, initially in the 1990s and then in 2022. Consequently, the narrative encompasses various perspectives on the protagonist’s experiences at different stages of her life, infusing the work with a unique freshness and, inevitably, profound poignancy.
