Tycoon is the eleventh detective novel by the acclaimed Slovenian author August Demšar, the second in the Vodnjaki trilogy, which began with the extensive novel The Church. In keeping with the trilogy’s title, a significant part of this novel is set in the village of the same name in the Pohorje area, where Štefan Matjašič, a wealthy entrepreneur and, for many, a tycoon, hails from and has big plans for. The central connecting thread between the many stories and thus characters is his daughter Sara Matjašič, a teenager in the eighth grade. One day, after the filming of a TV programme in which she appears, Sara disappears. It turns out to be a kidnapping demanding a ransom. Matjašič immediately goes into action and hires a retired police detective to find and rescue his daughter. But in a twist of events, Sara is shot dead during the rescue. Demšar’s crime team takes on an unusual case whose threads unravel in many directions, to Sara’s primary school teacher, to a cameraman and photographer, to Matjašič’s business partner, to Sara’s artistic half-sister, to Matjašič’s wife, and to a retired police detective who confesses to the murder. As the case is almost closed following the confession, many questions arise and the many illogicalities of the kidnapping slowly begin to unravel.
